Strongholds can come tumbling down
Have you ever been in a fort? I am talking really big fort. Personally, I love forts. Many years ago, I visited the Taj Mahal, considered to be one of the seven wonders of the world. I was disappointed. The Taj was beautiful, interesting, and the architecture amazing, but what really got my blood flowing was the Agra Fort situated across the river. This was where Shah Jahan lived and from where he ruled his kingdom. He was the one who commissioned the Taj to be built in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess who died giving birth to their 14th child. The Agra Fort, once the capital of India, was a walled city. It was a true stronghold.
The Fort was built with bricks in the inner core with sandstone on external surfaces. Some 4,000 builders worked on it daily for eight years, completing it in 1573. This Fort is 94 acres in size, its walls are seventy feet high. The double ramparts have massive circular bastions at intervals, with battlements, embrasures, machicolations, and string courses. Nobody entered this fort without permission. It was a stronghold. The bible talks about a stronghold as well. Only these strongholds are not physical but exist in the mind. Strongholds in the mind can be as impregnable as seventy-foot walls. You will notice that this Agra Fort stronghold took 4000 men and eight years to build. Strongholds of the mind don’t happen in a day, but many thoughts, (4000) repeated over an extended period will create a stronghold in the mind. Once this stronghold exists, it keeps good thoughts out, bad thoughts in, and we can’t seem to find victory over destructive habits or unwanted behaviours.
You can recognize if a stronghold exists between your ears if you can’t break a bad destructive habit. If you continually go from one bad relationship to another, if you can’t stop negative thoughts dominating your life, if you can’t stop eating, swearing, cheating, stealing or sweating (over small stuff), there might be a stronghold to be broken in your life. If you continually go back to the harmful tendency you are trying to eliminate, a stronghold exists in your mind.
Strongholds can come tumbling down. No matter how long they have been there, no matter how big, unyielding, and tough they present themselves, there are weapons designed for us to bring them down. God wants us to be free, not hemmed in by invisible walls, chained by invisible chains, shackled by invisible irons. This is the good news you will hear this Sunday. Freedom awaits, but first we might have to demolish strongholds. Strongholds come tumbling down when we employ the principles of God’s word to our thought life. I will be sharing how you can bring down those walls. Looking forward to being with you this Sunday.
