There is a psychological nugget buried in the seventh Chapter of Isaiah. This chapter has one of the more recognizable scriptures in it. In fact, the entire Evangelical and Catholic faith is hinged on this one verse; “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) While this verse is extremely important to the Christian faith, there is another one just ahead of it that is extremely important to one’s personal faith. It is not so famous. Yet its importance is not diminished by its lack of notoriety. I have read the book of Isaiah at least 30 times over my Christian journey, and it was only yesterday that this nugget of truth jumped out at me. The Bible is great that way, we can read it a dozen times, and each time find something new and impactful there, but I digress.
In this chapter, Isaiah is prophesying to King Ahaz of present and future events. But the King is incredulous. He hears the prophet, he even kind of believes the prophet, but he is not too sure about it. He is half hearted about the validity of the message. I can almost hear Isaiah shouting out the message in frustration, “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” Isaiah 7:9 In other words, quit being wishy washy. If you believe it, stand by it. This is the key to success of any venture, program, or life pursuits. Some thousand years later, Mary the woman who fulfilled the 14th verse understood this concept. When the angel announced she would be with Child from the Holy Spirit; her response was what ours should be every time we are asked to believe what God says, "I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said." (Luke 1:38)
I called it a psychological nugget because within this phrase, “if you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all” reveals what we are made of. It shows our inner strength. It weans out the double minded.
This Sunday, in our “Think Differently” series I will be talking about establishing strongholds in the mind. I began the series encouraging us to demolish strongholds, now I am saying we need to build some. We all suffer set backs, failures, and hardships. It is the faith that we have firmly established in our mind that will anchor us, keep us, and cause us not to falter.
This Sunday, I will be sharing how to create positive, protective, proactive strongholds in our mind. Look forward to seeing you. If you are out of town, and unable to attend, we encourage you to listen to the entire series which can be found at kootenaychristianfellowship.com.
