Christmas Requires a Lot of Preparations

Christmas requires a lot of preparations. I don’t mean Christmas won’t happen if you don’t prepare for it. Christmas is coming ready or not. Maybe you are like most of us, in a frenzy of activity preparing for the season. Some people are preparing for guests, others are preparing to go away. Some are preparing the house with festive colors and lights, while others are preparing themselves for the emotional turmoil that accompanies the unruly cousin or outspoken aunt, or the uncle that drinks too much.

At KCF we are engaging the tradition of lighting the candles of Advent. This Sunday, being the second Sunday of Advent, we are lighting the candle of Preparation. It symbolizes the preparation needed to receive the coming of the Messiah.

The richness of any experience is directly related to the level of preparation one engages in prior to the event. If you want to have a good holiday, some preparation will go a long way in realizing your goals.

This is true in every area of life. No less in the area of our spiritual walk with God. Often, we want God to “show up” in the midst of our trouble, challenges, or even in our every day life, but we do absolutely no preparation for his coming. Then, when we don’t see his coming, we are disappointed in God, or we conclude he does not care about us.

When Jesus arrived in Bethlehem, some experienced his arrival and others did not. When the Magi arrived to worship the new born King, they asked the reigning king in Judah where the Messiah was residing, so they could give gifts and worship him. Unlike the Magi, the king knew nothing of these things and had to bring in the “experts” to get some details. And even then, the king felt threatened by another “king” coming into his realm. Had he done his own preparation, he would have quickly learned that this Messiah was not interested in politics, but in the condition of the heart. He came to serve and not to rule. His mandate was to save, not subjugate the citizens.

Just like the first time, Jesus is coming again. Only this time he is coming not as a child but as a reigning King. He will come to finally deal with the pain of sin, the scourge of death, and the selfishness of humanity. Yes, he is coming and just like the first time, some will see him, meet him, and welcome his arrival. While others will be oblivious to his return and suffer for the lack of their preparations.

Jesus clearly said, he would return. Are you prepared? The quickest and easiest way to get ready for his coming in your life today and in the future is to give your heart and soul to him. Jesus has only good in store for you. He loves us with an everlasting love. When we live outside of his will for us, we don’t experience that love, but instead are left to our own devices.

This Sunday I will be giving some practical concepts on how we can get prepared for Christ’s coming. We want Jesus to come every day of our lives, but we also wait with expectation for his final arrival as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Communion

This Sunday is Communion Sunday. It is when we come together as a family to eat at the Lord’s Table.

Baptism

On Sunday, January 6th we will be having baptisms for followers of Jesus. This is for those that are choosing to put their past behind them and follow Jesus. Baptism is a one-time act, but then it requires of us to put our past behind us every day thereafter. If you have not been baptized as an adult, and are choosing to make Jesus your Lord and are desirous to be a follower of Him, then you are a candidate for baptism. Email me and we can discuss this with you. pastorjim@kcfoffice.com

Growth Groups

The new year will be coming upon us soon! We have opportunity for you to start the new year off on the right foot by trying something new and life giving! Group sign ups are now open for the January 3rd start up.

Groups meet once a week in home environments on Wednesday and/or Thursday nights. We delve into connecting deeper with each other and God by sharing our personal lives, studying based on the previous Sunday’s sermon.  Times are also designated for service projects and social times.

If you are interested in either facilitating a group or hosting in your home, please contact the church.

To sign up, simply call the church office 352.1722, email office@kcfoffice.com or sign up on Sunday at the church information table.

SpagHaiti

We are excited to report that just below $4100 was raised for Haiti to go towards furnishing a home for orphans in the Children’s Village. Children are often abandoned or sold as domestic slaves. Haiti Arise rescues these kids, places them in a family, and provides an education for them.

Please help us to give a home to eight more children.

Thank you to all those who contributed financially, of the time, resources, prayers and finances for this cause.

Donations to Haiti Arise can be made ongoing throughout the year. If you still wish to donate, visit www.kootenaychristianfellowship.com to pay via e-transfer or PayPal, call the KCF office to give via Interac for credit card giving or come and visit us at the church office to pay via debit, cash or cheque.
