Good Afternoon!
Ebola scare is sweeping the world. And rightfully so. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) says "the Ebola epidemic is the largest in history." According to CDC, there are 8400 cases presently and 4033 reported deaths. The World Health Organization reports that there could be 10,000 new cases per week within two months. Dr. Bruce Aylward, the WHO assistant director-general, puts the mortality rate at 71%. That is a serious problem. So the world is going all out to fight this invading menace of death.
I have no answers. But I know this, having been in the middle of a riot in India, having our team robbed at gunpoint in Guatemala, experiencing an earthquake in Haiti where 300,000 died in a day, and almost drowning in the ocean off the coast of Mexico, hope is possible when we know Christ. Death is not the final victor. The resurrection is. We need to pray like never before. We need to put our hope in Jesus. And we need to make a difference where we live.
Yet there is another invading force of death that has equal ferocity, but is not a virus. Instead it comes at the hands of fellow humans. According to the CBN website reporting on the ISIS threat, Dr. Sarah Ahmed, with the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, called the attacks genocide." "What's happening now to the Christians, to the Yazidis, to the minorities (in the last couple of days mostly to the Christians) is genocide," she told CBN News. "What's happening is what happened 200 years ago to the Jews [sic]."
Children are beheaded, women are raped, young girls are sold, and death reigns.
One is an unseen virus, the other has a face of a human. As I contemplate these two realities I wonder what is the answer? While we need to explore the medical, political, and humanitarian options with the greatest of vigor, ultimately, what we need is hope. And hope is only possible when one has an eternal perspective. I am struck with the challenge of the situation, while sitting here in my office, safe, secure, and healthy. Please answer the call to pray, both privately and corporately. We have two opportunities to pray corporately at KCF. One is on Wednesday morning at 7 am and the other is at 10 am. Consider making this a priority if you can. It may be us in the crisis soon.
This Sunday Joshua Hoffert will be sharing at KCF. Josh is leading the Dreams Interpretation course this week. I will be in Crawford Bay inducting the new pastors there, Richard and Ramona. Pray for us as I encourage the church to welcome them to their new home, Kootenay Lake Community Church
