Advent - Love

Vulnerable Love

This Sunday we will be lighting the candle of Love, as the Advent Calendar suggests. Christmas love points to the baby Jesus. But babies are not loving, just a lot of work.

There is nothing more helpless than a newborn human. They can’t communicate, (except scream) meaning they can’t tell you what they need, where it hurts, or what their problem is. They can’t walk, feed themselves, and are completely vulnerable to the elements. If left alone, they would die.

It is to this defenseless, helpless, and powerless posture the King of Glory subjects himself. The Christmas story is so profound that we often miss it.

Imagine an all powerful God, would come to the earth as a human baby completely dependent upon other humans to nurture, protect, and raise this person. Love to be real must be vulnerable. It has to have within it the option of choice, rejection, and abuse. God demonstrated his love for us by taking on the human need to be loved unconditionally with all its risks. At his birth he was vulnerable, during his life he was vulnerable, and at the cross, he chose to be vulnerable. At one point he said, I could call legions of angels to fight for me; instead, he cried Father forgive them, as he hung naked and bleeding on the cross. (Matthew 26:53) What this tells me is that I truly have someone that can identify with my own vulnerabilities. This Jesus understands us; because he was one of us. Therefore, every one of us can have confidence in Jesus to help us in our vulnerabilities.

Listen to this, “Since we have a great high priest, Jesus the Son of God, who has gone into heaven, let us hold on to the faith we have. 15  For our high priest is able to understand our weaknesses. (Because he was one of us) When he lived on earth, he was tempted in every way that we are, but he did not sin. 16  Let us, then, feel very sure that we can come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we can receive mercy and grace to help us when we need it. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Many of us feel vulnerable at this time of the year. There is uncertainty at every turn. Christmas is about the one who stepped into this world, experienced our pain, overcame and is ever present help us.

Feeling vulnerable? Reach out to the one who understands. It will make the best Christmas ever.
