Have you complained to God? If you say, no; can I talk to you about lying? Some of the greatest heroes of the faith have recorded laments, complaints, and protests at the way God interacted with their lives, the people around them, and their life situations. I think of Jonah, David, Abraham, Moses, even the Apostle Paul all lifted up their voices in disapproval of the way God acted, or how he failed to act in accordance with the way they expected. Dane Ortlund says up to 65 (almost half of the Psalms) are psalms of lament. 37 chapters out 42 in the book of Job are complaints. Here is the truth, no matter how good you try to live, life is filled with pain, disappointments, and mystery. Complaining is actually a function of grieving. It is an emotional expression of loss. What the church has not done well is taught on how to grieve appropriately.
There are two kinds of complaining. One is very unhealthy, the other is actually life giving, therapeutic and produces hopefulness. The difference is in the context. Complaining that is blaming is rarely helpful; as is complaining about people, circumstances, or situations that are outside of your control. This type of complaining will bring depression, bitterness, and can serve as a self fulfilling prophecy. But directing one’s lament and deep anguish to God reveals our dependence on God, our inability to control everything and our ultimate trust in a God that is good.
In the midst of our anguish we cry out with the Psalmist, “Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. Psalm 130:1-2 And He does! When we direct our cry to God instead of people, situations, or circumstances, we are surprised by his mercy, we are astonished by his deliverance, and we are amazed at his love for us.
This Sunday, I will be talking about the “good life” as promised in John 10:10. Jesus made a promise to give us life and that to the full. But that good life, may not be the same as your expectations. If you have been struggling with problems, coping with sickness, or feeling the pressure of the moment, the abundant life is for you. Come and join us this Sunday.
