First Love

First love. Hmmm, how sweet it is. The grass is greener, the birds are singing a melody straight to our heart, and the energy – it seems endless. First love is awesome, but it would kill us if the intensity did not wane. First love is God’s way of attraction. It gets us interested, started, and if handled correctly, moves us into a long-term intimate union with another - a human or with the Divine. For the purposes of this blog, I will direct my further comments towards the Divine. God wants to have an intimate relationship with us. When we open our heart to him, we often feel an experience of “first love.” God seemed so real, so awesome, and so magnificent. Every prayer answered, miracles happening everywhere, and the heart is filled with love for life. But then something shifts.

God seems distant. Troubles seem to follow me. I experience trials of all kinds. Did God stop loving me? No, instead, God was maturing me, bringing me to a place of intimate union with the Trinity. That is why James wrote the following: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3  because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4  Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”  (James 1:2-4)

As one presses into a trial with praise and joy, looking to Jesus for strength, healing, and provision, your first love will develop into a deep and enduring relationship with God our Father through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

This week I am starting a new sermon series called “PRAYING IN A NEW WAY”.

The focus will be developing deeper, more intimate connection and union with the Trinity. This series will be a fresh look at a subject often taken for granted. This Sunday, I will be talking about silence as prayer. The Sermon title is Silence, the Loudest of Prayers.

We look forward to seeing you there. Invite a friend, and let’s experience together a fresh take on our First Love.
