Love Hate Relationship
The word “hate” has become a bad word. I heard one mother say to her son, we don’t use the word “hate.” I thought, that is too bad. Some things we should hate. Now we should never malign, bully, hurt or show prejudice motivated by hate. That being said, if we understand the definition of hate as the feeling of intense or passionate dislike for someone or something, then there are things I hate. I hate pedophiles and pedophilia. I hate child slavery and child traffickers. I hate turnips. Nobody should make you eat turnips. I find those things abhorrent and repulsive. I hate anything that disrupts or challenges the idea of love. In fact, if I love perfectly, then anything that challenges love, I hate. God loves perfectly, and he is intensely passionate about his creation and thus, he says he hates sin and the ones who perpetuates evil. Psalm 5:4-7 says, “You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with you the wicked cannot dwell. The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong. (emphasis mine)You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors. But I, by your great mercy, will come into your house” If it were not for God’s great love and the fact that he is RICH in mercy, (Ephesians 2:4) we all would be doomed. This is what makes the cross so important. At the cross, Jesus took our wickedness upon himself and then to those who look to Him, he imputed his righteousness.
This Sunday, I will be expounding on the love/hate nature of God. You will be encouraged that God hates perfectly, because he loves perfectly. See you there - Pastor Jim Reimer.
