Living the Dream in a Prison Cell

The Apostle Paul is in prison. While he languishes in a dark, damp, dirty cell, his spirt soars. He writes a letter, meant to be circulated among the churches, which does not match his circumstances. He starts his letter, what is commonly referred to as Ephesians, by saying; “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”  (Ephesians 1:3)

What? Wait a minute. You are in prison! There because of a false accusation, at the mercy of a skewed justice system at best; still, you say you are “blessed with every spiritual blessing”? How is this possible they must have wondered? The word blessed is translated from the Greek word, eulogeō which is made up of two words; eu meaning to be well off, and logeō meaning to speak of, to give praise, to celebrate. Apostle Paul is reminding the saints (you and me) that our circumstances, the conditions we experience, and the accusations we face need not determine our spiritual experience or personal well-being. Paul, while in prison, could still praise the Lord. Despite his personal circumstances, his spirit soars. This can be our reality too. When we allow Jesus into our lives, and we find ourselves “in Christ” (a theme throughout Ephesians) we can and will experience every spiritual blessing from heaven in our earthly existence.

If you feel your personal circumstances are overwhelming, your emotional capacity at a breaking point, your life nearing a crisis, then Ephesians is for you. Join us as we mine the depth of God’s riches from Ephesians. You will be encouraged, and new strength will fill your day - Pastor Jim Reimer.
