Jump or Not to Jump
There is a story of a man, while on a mountain hike, slipped on the trail and fell. Fortunately, he landed on a ledge about twenty feet below, unhurt. However, there was no way off the ledge, either up or down. In desperation he looked to the heavens and cried out for help. A voice from heaven said, This is God, jump off the edge and angels from heaven will catch you and take you safely to the bottom of the cliff. The man looked over the edge, seeing the huge rocks and raging creek some 500 feet below; cried out again, “Anyone up there that can help me”. Again the voice said, “trust me, jump off the edge and angels will catch you and take you safely to the bottom.” At which the man, cried out, “Is there someone else up there that can help me.”
This is meant to be funny, but it carries an element of truth. We want God’s help as long as it is palatable, reasonable in our eyes, and doesn’t require too much of me. When we are not in trouble or in a crisis, we may confidently declare God has everything under control. But when disaster hits and God says, jump, or wait, or forgive, or make restitution, or humble oneself, or fight, or accept; there may be a tendency within us to evaluate and make our own decision (without God’s input) about what the best course of action might be.
From my experience, this is a bad decision. God has your best interest at heart. Obey God, trust that he does have everything under control. And watch how he turns “all things to good” (Romans 8:28)
