Evangelical Christianity makes a lot out of “being saved.” When I was new to the faith, I did street preaching. (This was back in the day when it was made popular by the hippies preaching against war.) I declared boldly, “You have to be saved.” To which one passerby asked, “Saved from what?” I was stumped. I really didn’t know! I just knew that was what preachers said, and when Jesus came into my life, my whole life changed. At that moment, I decided to learn what it meant to be “saved”. You too, might be thinking, ‘what do I need to be saved from’? According to Ephesians 2, we need to be saved from ourselves. Outside of Christ, we are dead to the life that God has to offer. And the crazy thing is, we don’t even know what we are missing. Someone born in a ghetto, does not know how much easier life can be. Or someone born in a rich family, may not know the value and richness of relationships where money is not present. The point is, when we are dead to God, we don’t know what we are missing. Jesus came to make us alive to God, so we can experience life as God intended for us.
This Sunday, I am continuing my sermon series on Ephesians. We will be looking at Chapter 2:1-10. There, we will learn the impact of this verse for us. “For it is by grace you have been saved, (emphasis mine) through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Join us at 10:30 am, we also have cookies - Pastor Jim Reimer.
