Honour Culture

In some cultures, honor is a big deal. The Bible was written from an eastern viewpoint where “honor” was considered a high sociological value. In this culture (Western), not so much. Some might see the abuse within culture of honor, and therefore reject it out of hand. However, there is a biblical imperative to honor. Are we missing the blessing of God, because we fail to honor our governmental leaders, our mentors, our teachers, our spouses, the aged?  The cultural value has shifted from respect to “what have you done for me lately” condition. Culturally, we discard family members, leaders, and employers on a whim. It used to be; we were loyal to our employers, family members, the stores we patronize, even to the car we drive, but not anymore. If my personal needs are not being met, then we drop them like a hot potato. Are we missing the blessing of God by our fickle and narcissistic tendencies? I leave you with this thought from

Philippians 2:2-4  “having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others (emphasis mine) above yourselves,  not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” What a difference that would make!

This Sunday, Darlington Emuka, will be our guest speaker. He will be talking about the “Principle of Honor.” Doreen and I will be visiting Cranbrook to attend our Granddaughter’s wedding - Pastor Jim Reimer.
