if I called you a thief, you may be offended, vigorously deny it, and be outraged that even such a thought might be expressed. Thou shalt not steal is the eighth commandment. And most of us will feel good about that one. But hold on for a second. What kind of stealing are we talking about? I don’t take what doesn’t belong to me, so I feel good. But do I steal time. Do I borrow and not return the item? Do I steal your affection by taking advantage of your good will? For example, a person offered, If you help me with getting my wood in for winter, I will help you bring your supply in. So, I help them get all their wood, cut, split and stacked. But when it came time for my turn, they were unavailable. We steal from the government, by claiming disability, when it is possible to work. We steal from our employer by taking longer or too many breaks, engaging in personal business while at work or taking time to be on social media.
Ephesians 4:28 tells us not to steal, but to work so we can share with others. The purpose of work is to benefit others. Stealing in all its forms has no benefit for others, but simply feeds oneself. We are called to a higher standard than those who are not Christ followers. We work hard, so we can be a blessing. And when we are a blessing, we get blessed beyond anything we could have achieved by stealing.
This Sunday, we will continue our sermon series on Ephesians, keying in on Chapter 4:28. Hope to see you there – Pastor Jim Reimer.
