Did you know that God has feelings? Jesus wept, God loves and is angry at times, and the Holy Spirit can experience sadness. God has human characteristics, or since we were made in His image, it might be better to say we have God-like characteristics. God wants us to be like Him. That is what the first three chapters of Ephesians are all about. He made it possible, and in the last three chapters of this book, He tells us how to make that “possible” a reality.
Ephesians 4:30 says, “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.” That is interesting. Puny, feeble, little old, insignificant me can influence how the Holy Spirit feels. Yup! It saddens God the Holy Spirit when we live below our capacity, capabilities, and calling. It makes Him miserable when we bite and devour one another as we carry within us the image of God Himself. It makes Him unhappy when we experience unhappiness because of broken relationships with each other. God is unity, He is love, and He is redemption. Anything short of that grieves the Holy Spirit.
I will continue my sermon series on Ephesians, focusing on this verse and the Holy Spirit this Sunday. We will learn who the Holy Spirit is, His importance, and why we mustn’t grieve Him. Come along this Sunday, live or online, and experience God working in your life – Pastor Jim Reimer.
