Joy – God’s Glitter
Joy is expected at Christmas. I was thinking about that. What if you don’t have joy? What if you are one of those experiencing a “blue Christmas”? Telling a depressed person to be joyful is as helpful as telling someone to calm down during an argument. (I tried it once, but it didn't work) Joy is a byproduct of something good that happened. But if you don't see any "good," joy will not have a chance. That is why Christmas can be depressing. For many people, Jesus has no place in Christmas, replaced by Santa, presents, social events, family gatherings, and stimulates. These replacement items can bring a certain sense of joy but can never meet the heart's deep yearning for connection with the source of Joy. Jesus says, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11 NIV) Notice three thoughts in this sentence. First, what did he tell us? Secondly, it is His joy. And thirdly, your joy may be complete.
Before this statement, he was telling them about the love God has for us. If we know God's love, experience an intimate relationship with God, and take time to cultivate this connection, a miracle will take place. We will experience joy from heaven and feel that joy in us, making us complete. This feeling is beyond stimuli, circumstances, or economics. Joy deep down in our hearts is possible, which will bubble and ooze out, spilling on others like a broken package of glitter.
Take some time this Christmas to connect with God through Jesus and experience the fullness of joy.
This Sunday, we will light the joy candle and invite all of us to a deeper connection to the one who brings joy to the world. Please bring a friend as we celebrate the reason for the season together - Pastor Jim Reimer.
