“Just as Christ”

The word ‘submit’ literally means to ‘stand under.’ As God’s people, his church, we are called to ‘stand under’ Christ, who is the head. It is not so popular today to come under anyone else’s leadership, or to submit to anyone. But what kind of head is he? How does he rule over us? The incredible thing about Jesus ‘the head’ is that he made himself the servant of all. Mark 10:43-45 gives a picture of this upside-down kingdom and how it works, Jesus says, “...Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”  If anyone wants to be the greatest or the first, they must be the servant, even the slave of all, and the astounding thing is Jesus did this for us! He became the slave of all! Even though he was the head, he came and stood under us, he “being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant… he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:6-8) It doesn’t get any lower than that! He took all his legitimate Lordship and laid it aside. He stooped down into the dirt and filth of our world and lifted us up. Now that is the kind of head that I want to stand under! Who wouldn’t want to stand under a head like that, being subject to Christ?

So, in our relationships, be “just as Christ” - He is both the head that comes under and lifts up and the one who perfectly submitted to the Father’s will in everything. Imitate Christ, be like him, ‘mimic him’. Whether we are leading or being led, our attitude should be the same as Jesus. And in my relationship with him, as I look at these truths and how he loves us, love rises up within and I find myself longing to be under his leadership, because, what a leader he is!

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” 1 John 3:16

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1- Andrew Freeman
