At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry (Matthew 4) He was led by the Spirit into a place of difficulty. There, He was tempted by the devil—not just through His thoughts, circumstances, or physical condition, though all these played a role. The key point is that it was the devil himself who sought to destroy Him. When Jesus was hungry, physically weak, and emotionally drained from fasting—at His lowest point—the devil came to Him.
Sometimes, God leads us into difficult situations to bring us into greater maturity and victory. In those places, we will face challenges, hardships, and opposition—and we can expect the devil to show up. He showed up in Job’s life, but Job overcame. He showed up in Daniel’s life, and Daniel was victorious. He showed up in Peter’s life, and Peter was restored. But he also showed up in Cain’s life, in King Saul’s life, and in Judas the betrayer’s life—leading each to destruction.
The lesson is clear: we all have a tempter, but we also have a Victor. No one can escape temptation, but everyone who looks to Jesus can walk in victory.
This Sunday, I’ll be speaking on the reality of the spiritual realm—and the certainty of our victory in it.
We look forward to seeing you Sunday @10:30am, 520 Falls Street – Pastor Jim Reimer.
