Never without an option!
We are never without an option! What an incredible truth! Whenever we are in need, whenever we are in trouble, whenever we are feeling lacking or lonely, distraught or desperate, we have an option! We can come aside and seek the God who sees us and the God who hears us and the God who cares for us.
God revealed himself to Abram and from that moment on it starts a relationship that would change the world. Abram whose name is changed later to Abraham is called into relationship with God and God not only appears to him, but Abraham appears to God, he seeks him out. He starts a practice of building altars to seek the LORD. He doesn’t just wait till the next time God appears to him, but he takes action. Genesis 12:7 “So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.” Later on in his travels it says, “There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.” (12:8). He built new altars and returned to ones where he had had an encounter with God before, “…and where he had first built an altar…there Abram called on the name of the LORD. (13:4). Wherever he went he met with the LORD, “So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.” (13:18)
God is the God of encounter, he wants to reveal himself to us and he wants us to push into him for relationship too. This week of prayer and fasting has been an opportunity to seek him, to come aside and in some ways ‘build an altar’ a meeting place. This Saturday we start 24hrs of prayer in the ‘Lookout Centre’ and there are more opportunities to seek God for this coming year, not just for what he can do, but for who he is. I believe God is calling us this year to meet with him. I know we always have that opportunity, and God always has that desire, but I really believe that God is highlighting this for us as a fellowship this year, that at the bedrock of all we do, would be this growing intimacy with God.
The heavy lifting is done, where we could never approach him before, now through his sacrifice on our behalf we have free access into his presence. No need to wonder if you are worthy, or good enough, we come through the sacrifice of Jesus in our place and through believing in him, the promise for us, like Abraham it is “credited (to us) as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6)
This is a year of encounter, not guilt, not shame, not duty, but the invitation into his presence. Let’s take him up on the offer!
