Are You a Blessing?
Do you think of yourself as a blessing?
I mean—truly—a blessing to others. A conduit of God’s joy. An encourager to anyone you meet.
For some, that idea feels uncomfortable. It can sound a little like bragging—almost what we might call rodomontade—boastful or exaggerated talk. But this isn’t about self-promotion; it’s about identity and purpose.
Notice what God said to the father of faith, Abraham: “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2 NIV)
God’s intention has always been clear: we are blessed to be a blessing.
Many of you know that I am currently walking through a season of grief and compounded sadness. In a quiet moment recently, I sensed God whisper something unexpected: “Even though you are sad, you can still smile and be an encouragement to others.”
That thought stayed with me.
God blesses us so that we, in turn, have the resources, the strength, and the opportunity to bless others. From the very beginning in Genesis, the idea of blessing carries with it fruitfulness, increase, and life. It’s often pictured like water—a cistern filled so it can give life to others. This connects beautifully with Jesus’ words in John 7, where He says that out of our inner being will flow rivers of living water—refreshment for those around us.
What a picture.
Even in the middle of challenges, heartache, and disappointment, when we choose to bless others, something remarkable happens: we begin to experience the outpouring of God’s grace in our own lives.
We were made for this!
This week, I’ll be sharing more on this theme: we are made to be a blessing.
In His Big Story, the theme we’ve been exploring these past weeks is how we fit into it. Each of us has a meaningful role to play—to be God’s conduit and to steward His blessing in a hurting and broken world.
So perhaps the better question is not “Am I a blessing?” but “Who can I bless today?”
Look forward to being with you all this coming Sunday, Jim Reimer.
