Forgiveness
I don’t know if you have seen the movie “Unbroken”, it tells the incredible story of Louis Zamperini - Olympic runner, whose plane in WW2 was shot down, and he spent 47 days at sea on a life raft, the sole survivor. He was rescued only to be taken by the Japanese and put in a POW camp, and endured horrific treatment at the hands of some of the guards.
He amazingly survived the war, but what the movie doesn’t tell is the aftermath. Yes he was liberated, but tormented by nightmares, anger, alcoholism and a definite plan to return to Japan and take revenge and kill one of the cruelest guards. This strain almost destroyed his marriage and his life.
However, in 1949 at a Billy Graham crusade, Louis met Jesus and everything changed… God’s love filled his heart, the nightmares stopped, love displaced anger, his marriage was saved, he found true freedom, and he carried a message of forgiveness for the rest of his life, even forgiving those guards who tortured him.
Louis met Jesus. He was reconciled to God. The truth is that he had been an enemy of God, but Jesus came to die in his place. 2 Corinthians 5 says, “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself… and gave us the ministry of reconciliation…”
All of us whether we realise it or not have been enemies of God… but through Jesus and receiving what he did, each one of us has the opportunity to be reconciled, to come into relationship and friendship with God, not based on anything we have done, but what he did for us. There is forgiveness and freedom, and he will help you to forgive others. BE RECONCILED!
This Sunday we will be looking at the immense debt that we have been forgiven and the life of freedom that he has made available. We went from being enemies of God, to friends, and those who now carry this message of hope and forgiveness to the world. We have been forgiven, reconciled, brought into friendship and the hope that we have is tremendous.
Love to all,
Andrew
