A Tribute

As many of you will have heard early on Tuesday morning Brian Doerksen went to be with Jesus. Brian was one of Canada’s best known worship leaders and songwriters and his songs have been sung all over the world for the last 4 decades!

So many people will be able to tell of a moment where God touched their lives through one of his songs - for me it was Christmas day 1994. I was in Moscow, Russia and things had not really gone as planned. Another guy and I were there, trying to get visas for our team to go to India- but we were locked out of the Moscow apartment and when we finally got in I felt isolated and alone and things felt very difficult. It did not feel like a Christmas day at all. However, I opened a package from my family in England and inside was a new Vineyard worship tape - ‘Light the fire again’ with Brian Doerksen. I put it in my ‘walkman’ (some of you will know what I mean) and started to listen. I think the whole album was meaningful to me, but the last song broke me down. The song is a cry from our struggles but then God breaking in asking “Will you worship, will you bow down before your Lord and King?” I wept as God broke in and called me to worship even in the midst of hard times. Then the song changes to a response, “I will worship, I will bow down before my Lord and King, I will love you, I will give you my heart my everything.”

Words can’t really express all that I felt, but I know God deeply touched me and I won’t ever forget it.

Whatever we are going through, we have a God who cares for us and never leaves us - he calls us in the midst of it all to worship him, to love him, to bow down before him, to give him everything- and in that place there is such life and the awareness of being fully known by God and surrounded by his love.

Brian, again and again pointed people to Jesus and called us to a response of worship and surrender. As we come this Sunday or wherever we may be let’s make this the posture of our hearts! “We will worship, we will bow down before our Lord and King, we will love you, we will give you our hearts, our everything.”

 Love to all,

Andrew
