A Father’s Influence

Like father like son! Is that a good statement or a negative for you? This Sunday is Father’s day. For many it is a special day. But not so much for multitudes of sons and daughters. Absentee fathers, dead beat dads, abusive men, emotionally checked out fathers, all contribute to an emotional pain that is deep and can be life debilitating.  The sad truth is that dads may not know any better. Successive generations are producing kids just like their parents. And the beat goes on.  It doesn’t have to; you can change the narrative of your story complete with an ending that will make you pleased. The influence of a father is immense. If you have had the misfortune of an uninvolved father, there is hope for you.

Considering the Next Generation

One can reverse the negative influences experienced while growing up. It may not be easy, depending on the circumstances of your own story. But it is essential to come to a place of emotional health, considering the next generation in your family of origin will in all likelihood take on the characteristics of the previous generation. Adult children, there is hope. We have a heavenly father that is patiently waiting to be involved. He is loving and caring. He will never leave you or forsake you. Abusiveness and manipulation are not in his character. And most importantly, he is the great healer. Our Heavenly Father is able to take ashes and turn them into beauty. He is one that can turn our mourning into dancing.  I did not grow up having a good relationship with my father. It was not his fault per se, he was simply living out what was modeled to him by successive generations before him. When I became a father I decided to be an involved father, but didn’t know how. This began a process of finding a male mentor, seeking forgiveness for the way I treated my dad, and allowing the Holy Spirit access to the painful areas of my life. The result was twofold. I had the good fortune of establishing a close and committed relationship with my dad before he passed away (I cherish this immensely).  And I was able to have a deep and committed relationship with my children, which carries on to this day.

Being friends with my adult kids is the best gift I could possibly have.

This Sunday I will be continuing my series on being Emotionally Healthy, with an emphasis on Father’s Day.  I will be sharing tips on how to experience healing, how to be an involved Father, and how to grow into emotional health.
