Do you ever feel powerless? Powerlessness can come at different times. Like that feeling when you are sitting behind the wheel of your car and the blue flashing lights are behind you. You look in the mirror and there is the slow walk of the man in blue to your driver’s window, and you know it is going to cost you, and there is nothing you can do about it. Powerless. Or when your best friend is in the hospital and so you phone for information and the voice at the other end says, sorry, I can’t tell you anything. It is confidential. Powerless. Your teenager goes wild despite your best efforts. Powerless. Sears files for bankruptcy and your pension fund disappears. Powerless. There is a memo that layoffs are imminent. The company you have given 18 years of your life to is restructuring and you’re the odd man out. Powerless. Or maybe you are homeless and everyone tells you to get a job, but no one will hire you. Powerless.
For some, that powerlessness feeling can be stimulated simply by looking at that mountain of laundry, pile of dirty dishes, or spouse that won’t change. It could be one’s health, one’s financial situation, or even family dynamics causing you to feel completely and utterly powerless. The point I am making is that all of us have and will feel powerless when the right circumstances and conditions are put upon us. There is no worse feeling than being powerless, to be stymied, to be without hope and recourse. This is the reality many experience. To cope with this awful condition, many resort to harmful practices like self-medication, isolation, pursuit of wealth, bullying, and even self-deception. (Self-deception, is the practice of thinking more highly of yourself than you ought.) There is a better way.
Jesus instructed the disciples that they would receive POWER (emphasis is mine) when the Holy Spirit comes upon them. (Acts 1:8) This word, power is dynamis from which we get the word dynamite from. Holy Spirit is as powerful as dynamite, meaning that no matter what is happening in your life, there is a power available greater than the situation you are facing. Holy Spirit will not always remove you from the situation that would render you powerless, but Holy Spirit will always give you the power and strength to overcome. This gives me hope and confidence. Powerlessness can paralyze, but Holy Spirit can energize you, engage you, and empower you to overcome. We miss a lot simply because we don’t allow the Holy Spirit to come upon us. To fill us with His power.
This Sunday I will share the difference between the Holy Spirit being in us as a result of salvation. This is awesome, knowing God is always with us. But there is another aspect to the Holy Spirit. He wants to come upon us as well, with power. God intended us to be little dynamos here on the earth; fighting for justice, our environment, and advancing the Kingdom of God.
