Gaining Wisdom From Others
When looking for advice, what qualifications would you consider? Here are four that are essential:
1. Character - is the person who they purport to be?
2. Lifestyle - does the person do what they espouse?
3. Achievements - is the fruit of the person admirable and what you would like to emulate?
4. Knowledge - does the person possess training, expertise, and recognizable credentials?
The first three are wisdom; the last is education. One can be really smart, have university degrees, be considered an expert, but still not have wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to navigate the complexities of life with success.
Wisdom is the ability to navigate the complexities of life with success.
Wisdom comes from God and is often dispensed through others. The writer to Hebrews is dispensing wisdom when he says, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:7-8)
In other words, we can gain wisdom from the advice of others, but we need to consider the outcome of their lives and how God interacted with them. Because God doesn’t change, we can trust the precepts of God to work in us, as they have worked in others. The ancients of old can teach us. Hence, we ought to take the book of Proverbs seriously. In it lies the precepts of God for our protection, success, and eternal life.
Precepts are general principles that work in real life. Within this book we see general principles, that if followed will put us on a path that is pleasant, peaceful, and prosperous.
This Sunday, I will be talking about God’s eternal precepts, that don’t change with the whim of society or google. I invite you to read the book of Proverbs, as we prepare for this sermon series.
