Jesus is called the Word of God. What does that mean? Is that significant or just a phrase? John, one of Jesus disciples, wanting to give an account of Jesus starts off with John 1:1-2 (NIV): “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.” And then lets the reader know who the “Word” was by saying “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 (NIV)
The same writer again says in the last book of the Bible called Revelations that Jesus name is “Word of God”. (Revelations 19:13) To comprehend this term, we have to understand who he was writing to.
The Jewish people saw the word of God as a form of communication to us humans, his creation. Words come from deep within a person - from the heart of the person. Words reveal who we are. But not alone, our actions also reveal who we are. When we put our actions and our words together, then we get a complete picture of the person. God sent his Word so people could know who He was, but now He was sending his Son as the word personified, so humans could not only hear who God is, but experience the Word in action. This one fact sets Jesus apart from all other spiritual teachers and masters. He is God in the flesh.
Often we hear people say the Bible is the “word of God”. That is technically not accurate. The Bible has within it the Word of God; it also has within it, false statements, inaccurate assumptions about God, human atrocities not sanctioned by God. (That statement should get some people going.) But when we know Jesus, we actually know the heart of God from where we get His Word.
In the early eighties I went to India for six weeks to preach. During that time, I could not phone my wife - there no cell phones; I could not email her (imagine that), could not Facebook, Tweet, or Instagram. I missed her terribly. Then one day I got a letter from her. I read that letter over and over again. Wow, it was her heart communicating with me.
If you want to know what God is like, then look at Jesus’ actions and read His Word. The Word became flesh and is full of grace and truth. The world needs grace and truth desperately. That will be the subject of my message on Sunday; Jesus coming as the Word to present grace and truth. The answer to our problems is not another law, another government, another religion, another philosophy, but the Word in our hearts that we too might experience grace and truth.
S.H.A.R.E Nelson is getting ready to move.
We are busy getting the space below our church to bring the store over. It is getting closer. This week we will be getting the floors done, start on the heating system and finishing off the electrical. We will begin to move stuff over September 20, with the anticipated opening for business October 1. We will need some volunteers to assist in getting everything ready. The Store has been doing exceptionally well in this year. We are so thankful for all the donations and our dedicated staff.
Next week we will give a detailed description of where we can assist in this exciting new phase at KCF.
