Pastor Jim's Blog

I am going to be starting a summer sermon series called WHY. How to sermons, books, and ted talks are all the rage. Everyone wants to tell us how to do ___ (you fill in the blank). We have books, Pinterest, and don’t forget Google on what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. But very little on why we do what we do. No place is this more prevalent than in the Church. We are very good at telling people how to live, what to believe, and when we should be putting these things into practice. But what about why? Most Christians still believe the bible is important, but do you know why? The bible is still the best-selling book of all times according to the Guinness book of world records, but for the average person, it has lost its relevancy. When we use the bible as our reason for the way we live, people look at us, incredulously and ask, “why would you do that”. Can you answer intelligibly why?

At one time, most everybody had a bible, not so much anymore. And if you preface your remarks today by saying, ‘the Bible says’, you will have as much credibility as a street beggar in a corporate boardroom. So why do we still use the bible, when the world has moved on. That is the big question. That is the question I will endeavor to answer this coming Sunday. I will not tell us we should use it as our guide to spirituality, although that is certainly true. Also, I will not tell you how to read the bible, even though a bible reading plan is the most effective way to experience the God of the bible. But you will go away with knowing the why!

In coming weeks, I will be speaking about “why Jesus” and not just any spiritual path of your own choosing. In a culture that celebrates pluralism, I will be answering the question, “Why Evangelize”. Other topics forthcoming will be:

  • Why Church, when we can love Jesus on our own without the stress of Sunday morning meeting,
  • Why be a servant, when we are told we can be the “boss”,
  • Why a life of purity, when it matters not how we live, as God loves us anyway,
  • Why marriage, when it is cheaper and easier just to live together,
  • And my last one will be on “Why control the tongue”, when we are continually taught to be expressive and share our thoughts.

At the end of the summer, you will have a better idea of “why we do what we do” making life and your summer that much more interesting and fun.

By the way, you may be asking, Why this sermon series? It is because I am completely convinced that most of us know what we should be doing and how we should be doing it, but most of us can’t articulate clearly WHY we are doing what we are doing. It is the WHY that inspires, keeps us motivated, and gives meaning and purpose to our lives. Now you know why!

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Mural at KCF

In the coming weeks we will see a mural painted on the retaining wall opposite our Church Building. We have been praying that a mural would be painted on this huge blank uninviting space for a long time. God answered our prayers. The City of Nelson, through the Arts Council has commissioned Katie Green to paint a mural. Green is a graduate with distinction from the University of Calgary's BFA program, Katie's work has recently been exhibited in galleries such as Contemporary Calgary (formerly the Museum of Contemporary Art) and The Nickle. Her burgeoning body of mural work can be seen internationally in Nepal, India, Florida and Sri Lanka, and was undertaken both independently

and in collaboration with a number of collectives, non-profit organizations and communities.

Here is a brief description. Green, in her art, endeavours to bring together the connections between animals and humans. This is fitting since our building houses the SPCA and Our Daily Bread. Some may find the imagery on this piece a bit controversial; however, we were not consulted on the content as it is City property. Then on the other hand, if it creates a stir, we have the opportunity to invite Jesus into the conversation.

I am pleased that this is happening. It is an answer to prayer. It is not exactly what I had envisioned on that wall, but then God knows best. We look forward how God will use this creative piece for his Glory.
