Mother’s Day and Sin in Us
This Sunday is Mother’s Day. A day we honor moms, give them breakfast in bed, and if you are a kid, try to be good for one day at least. I remember as a child thinking; I should be good to my mom on this special day. This kind of thinking reveals something about me.
1. I know when I am being good or not. 2. Mother deserves my obedience more than one day of the year, but I am rebellious. 3. I am bad even when I know I shouldn’t be.
This all reveals the terrible truth that I am born with an innate desire to sin.
Where did sin come from anyway? This thing that makes me act in a way that I am ashamed, embarrassed, and keeps me drinking from the chalice of guilt. Our culture goes to great length to try to erase any vestiges of the emotion of guilt. But still, there it is. Try as we might; we cover up our inner thoughts, we hide our deceptive intentions, and we continually present ourselves in the best light possible; all in the fear of people finding out who we really are. It is called sin. How did sin come to be in us, is a question we will answer this Sunday. Not only will we find out how sin got to be here, we will learn what to do about it. Let me say that God never wanted us to live under a cloud of an invisible oppression. He never intended us to always be looking over our shoulder hoping no one finds out. He wants to set us free from the violent and unloving thoughts that crowd our sensibilities. When God created you, the universe, and all that we enjoy, it was and is very good. But sin came along and it got corrupted. It is a curse we did not ask for. The good news is that Jesus came to reverse this curse, make sin ineffectual and establish good and healthy relationships with God and each other.
So, as we anticipate Mother’s Day; if there is some painful brokenness, some unresolved issues, some need for forgiveness, know that with Jesus in your life it can be different.
This Sunday, we will continue on our sermon series, Doctrine of Sin. We will learn where it comes from and what to do about it. We will be on Facebook only this week. Please join us at 10:30 am for our live presentation. Why not invite, share, and like our page.
