Fruitfulness – A Promise
Fruitfulness. Is this the word that describes you? If not, it can be. Yes, even in this uncertain times of restrictions, isolation, and even cancellations, fruitfulness can be your reality. Or maybe your life is filled with boredom, without purpose, and a disappointment. It can be different. Then again, it might be midlife crisis nipping at your heels. I remember the day when the reality hit, Jim, you are not going to reach your life goals, you will just plain run out of time. So is this when I buy a sports car, (well maybe not a sports car, since I don’t have a driver’s license) unbutton my shirt and wear a heavy gold chain, and look for a younger partner? Never!
We can be fruitful. Yes, I can be fruitful even if there is a pandemic, if my life is blah, or if I am over the proverbial hill. The reason is simple. It is a promise of God. Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last.” (John 15:16) This promise is not selective, but available to everyone. Jesus has already appointed you to fruitfulness, meaning he has chosen you, hand picked you, singled you out for fruitfulness.
This promise is realised simply by aligning oneself with God’s purposes. Fruitfulness in horticulture is achieved simply by the plant being in alignment with the requirements of fruitfulness. Again Jesus’ words are instructive. “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” (John 15:4) The promise is so simple; it easy to miss. Remaining or aligning oneself with/in Christ will automatically, supernaturally, and incrementally produce fruitfulness. The key point here is Christ, not you. Our place is simply to “remain”.
This Sunday we will be continuing our sermon series taken from John 15 called From the Upper Room to the Living Room. Jesus’ last words to his disciples are recorded here. In preparation for his departure, he is encouraging his disciples then and now that we can be fruitful. Find out more this Sunday. Invite a friend or family member and join with us.
