Never Be Alone
John 16:7 (NIV) 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
It was in September of 1980, when my two best friends, left me alone in Crawford Bay, BC. I remember the anguish I felt in my heart as they drove away in that big old moving van. I wanted to run after it like a little kid, crying out “don’t leave me here, alone.” They had come with the moving van to deliver all our worldly possessions from Calgary to Crawford Bay, so Doreen and I could plant a church. We didn’t know anyone, we had no money, and the place we were moving into was a mess. I mean literally, a run down, derelict, bona fide mess. At that moment, I could not think of anything good about my two best friends leaving me there – alone.
Jesus kept warning the disciples that he was going to be leaving them. And they did not like it either.
Have you ever felt that “alone” feeling? It might have come when you moved to a new city, or taken a new job, or when facing a huge problem that only you can solve. Interestingly, both the CEO (the one at the top) and the janitor (the one at the bottom) both can equally feel alone, just for different reasons. Nowhere is the awful, yet wonderful truth; often, Jesus creates the scenario or impression of “leaving us alone”.
He does it for our good. It is in this place the Holy Spirit can come. When we are alone, nowhere to go, no props holding us up, no one to lean on, then God can truly manifest. Holy Spirit loves to lift us up, answer our prayers and come to our aid, so we can learn this most valuable truth. With God, we are never alone. It may seem so, it may feel like it, it may even look like it, but it is not so. When we invite God into our lives, we can expect Holy Spirit to be around us, beside us, and IN US.
After that moving van disappeared down the road, I can remember clearly turning around and saying to God, “okay, it is you and me now.” And as they say, the rest is history. It was good for my friends to leave me alone, as it forced me to trust in God and God alone.
The feeling of being alone is hard. I am aware of the challenge. But this is your opportunity to experience the presence of God in the person of the Holy Spirit in your life. And that is the best thing that could ever happen to you. Why not invite in the Holy Spirit right now, wherever you are? If this is something you are struggling with send me a note, I would be happy to pray with you.
This Sunday, I will be speaking about the purpose of the Holy Spirit in the world today. It will encourage and help you in your everyday life. Join us and why not invite family and friends to join you as we worship together.
