Jesus Prayed
Jesus prayed. Let that sink in for a moment. John records these words, “After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:”(John 17:1) The content of his prayer is significant, but the fact that he prayed is extraordinary. The Creator of the universe, the Word of God that became flesh, the one who is pure and without sin, felt the need to pray. If Jesus, the Son of God felt the need to pray, it begs the question, just how important is this thing called prayer?
The context reveals Jesus had just finished a marathon of teaching in the upper room. (John 13-16)
The fact that Jesus prayed at the conclusion of his teaching is instructive. He is showing us that the content of our presentation, the ability of the teacher, or even the veracity of the material is not enough. Unless the Spirit of the Living God is involved, our human efforts are just that, human. We need the Divine spark, a Holy intervention, a Jehovah connection into all that we say or do. Unless God’s mark, his Holy seal, his stamp is on what we say or do, it will be only fluff and temporal at its best and outright disaster and failure at its worst.
Prayer is the most dynamic activity we can engage in. Jesus started his ministry with prayer and ended it with the same. Jesus did nothing without consultation with the Father and acted only in consort with the Father through prayer.
We must pray. We need to pray in groups, in private, in public, alone, with each other, when in trouble, or having success. We don’t pray to get God to do what we want, we pray so we will do what God wants. The irony is, when we do what God wants, we actually experience what we want.
Prayer is the key to eternal life, success, and knowing the will of God. My encouragement for you reading this, is to jump onto an online prayer group today. This will help you to pray continually and consistently. Pick a time each day that you can spend a few minutes (as much as you feel comfortable) alone in prayer. You will find it easier if it is consistent. And lastly, practice continual prayer; meaning, pray throughout the day. Engage the presence of God in all you do. Jesus needed to pray. We do too.
This Sunday I will be enlarging on this theme. Join with us and invite a friend. We love to have you with us each Sunday.
