Jesus Still Prays For Us
Just hours before Jesus went to the cross, he offered an interesting prayer for his beloved disciples. Here it is, “I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are one.” (John 17:11)
Jesus was concerned for their protection. He knew they would face fears of abandonment seeing their mentor and hero dying on the cross. He knew they would battle with guilt and depression as they all abandoned him at his time of greatest need. He knew they would face fierce opposition just for being his disciples in the dark hours after the crucifixion.
Here we see the big three emotional responses - abandonment, guilt, and personal safety – which would hit them hard in coming days ahead.
The big take away for me, is that Jesus anticipated their emotional future, and get this, prayed for them. As the realities of life swirl around us, we all at times feel abandoned by those we love, have guilt as a result of our misguided behaviour and fear of losing our personal well being and safety.
But Jesus prayed for them. And if we read just a little further into the book of Acts, we will see how that turned out. The church was born, great miracles were performed, and the disciples were dynamite in their witness for Jesus. And further in this chapter Jesus makes the point, he is still praying for us. Yes he is! It may feel like you are lost, nowhere to turn, life is dark and without hope, but know this – Jesus is praying for you. Take encouragement with this promise. “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” (Hebrews 7:25)
This is what the early disciples experienced, being saved completely. And this can be your experience too, since Jesus is alive, he still prays for you. I love the phrase, “he is able save completely.” Completely; that is, not half way, not a little, not sometimes, but COMPLETELY.
This Sunday, I will be enlarging on this theme. Prayer is not getting God to do what we want, but the practice of prayer will get us to do what God wants. When we are doing what God wants, then we tap into the power of God, the miracles of God, and abiding presence of God. Join with us this Sunday; invite a friend and a family member to join us for a transformative message on the power of prayer.
