Change That Lasts
Have you ever wondered why you fall back into old ways that are not helpful or desirable? You see an area that needs adjusting in your life, you get inspired, you start strong, but then… after time, you fall back into the old ways.
Unfortunately, this is typical, common and frustrating. It is the reason why there is no end to self help books being written and read; we all fail. But there is hope. Change is not achieved in the information we receive, but in the person of Jesus through the Holy Spirit. Our culture presents as if information is the healer. The truth is, the information is just a vehicle for us to know where to find the healer.
The one that heals our soul, sets us on a steady course, who transforms our lives. Change is achieved by living in the power of the Spirit of God.
We all live by systems (or habits) we have developed through our life experience. While those systems may be unhealthy, it is still our coping methodology. If we want a lasting change in our lives, we have to change something. The Bible speaks to this; that is why Jesus said, “He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”’ (Matthew 18:2-4)
Experiencing “kingdom” blessings requires change. But change is not easy. For lasting results, to really be free, for the effect of change to be fruitful, it requires three things:
1. Time - One must give the new lifestyle time to become a regular part of your life. In short, one must not quit. It is the only way your new systems, rhythms of life, or the new habits can be established and become a way of life.
2. Associations - Triggers will set us backwards faster than a banana peel on a wet floor. And nothing triggers us faster than those we associate with. We need people around us that will support, encourage, and pray for us as we make changes in our lives. This is one of the many reasons why small group and Church attendance is so important.
3. You - If you want to NOT fall back into old ways, if you want to have better lifestyle outcomes, if you want to experience the Fruit of the Spirit; it will require you to stop making excuses, stop blaming others, and most importantly, stop feeling sorry for yourself. Jesus loves us, has a plan for us, and when we give our lives over to him like little children, we will see the change we desire… last.
