What Can They Take From You?
At the time of this writing, people are losing their jobs because of the forced vaccine requirement. The Vaccine mandate issued by the BC Provincial Health Authority requires all health care workers to be double vaxed in order to retain their jobs. More than 4000 individuals have refused. Their decision is not without massive consequences both to themselves and the Health Care sector.
In the tenth chapter of the book of Hebrews it outlines some of the challenges experienced for the choices they made. It includes public shaming (sounds like Facebook to me), persecution, imprisonment, property confiscated and even death.
With this backdrop the writer says, “do not throw away your confidence”. (Hebrews 10:35) Confidence is always a challenge when things are going bad. But it is then that we must take stock, evaluate, and decide not to “throw away” what has worked in the past. If we can maintain our confidence, there is a promise. Here is the context, “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” (Hebrews 10:35-36)
Confidence is always rewarded. In sports, confidence is the key to success. In business, confidence will help you to pivot before disaster hits. In marriages, confidence will help you ride through the rough patches. (every marriage has rough patches) Confidence is key. But confidence can’t be irrational, has to be based on truth, and requires both intellectual and emotional consent. Confidence based on the correct foundational pillars of life experience, will be rewarded, if one perseveres. Did you see the little word, “if”? It is conditional. If one continues, doesn’t quit, but continues in the will of God, you will be rewarded. Perseverance is a lot easier when one knows they are in the will of God: That God has directed me, that I am not doing this all on my own, and that despite the hardships, persecutions, and maybe even death, I am in the centre of God’s will.
I am not writing this as support for or against vaccines, but I am writing to those that have put their trust in Jesus and are seeking his will the best they can. Base your confidence in Christ, the maker of heaven and earth, the one that can move mountains, and who promised never to leave you. Find the centre of his will for your life and then go for it. Knowing that your confidence is not based on circumstances, luck, or other peoples’ whims, but is securely fastened to the Rock that is solid and secure. Never throw that away.
This Sunday, I will be sharing insights of the inner workings of the church leadership from the book of Acts. Successful churches are not by chance but has to do with leadership, governance, and systems developed. The book of Acts impacted the known world, but they did it through the vehicle of the Church. We will examine some of those concepts and the opportunities it provides for each of us here in Nelson.
