What News Would Fill You With Joy?

What news would fill you with joy? If you follow the advent calendar, this Sunday we light the candle of Joy. The message of the angel to the shepherds is: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:10-11) The birth of a child will fill any home with “great joy”. But notice the words “for all people”. They were announcing the birth of a child, not just for the pleasure and enjoyment that any parent feels, but a joy that is for the world. This child, born to humble parents, with no name or status, in a barn somewhere that no one knew the address to, is designated to be the saviour of the world! Incredible.

From our cultural vantage point, this makes no sense. But to these shepherds, the announcement echoed a long standing promise. A Messiah was coming. They hoped for it, they believed for it, they long for it, and now they were getting a message it had arrived. Their long standing hope was being realized this night. It was better than winning the lottery, better than an all expense paid trip around the world, even better than a KCF Christmas eve dinner. This was the news that every child, woman and man was waiting for. It filled them with joy.
This speaks to me of another promised event that is a long time in the making; Jesus’ second coming. His appearance will not be in some obscure town, in an out of the way barn, but in great majesty, glory and power. We shall all behold him, every eye shall see him, and God’s final judgment will come on the earth. This world is a mess. And it shouts to us of Christ’s imminent return.

As we prepare for Christmas, his first coming, get ready for his second coming. Invite this Saviour that will bring joy to all people into your every day life, into your heart and into your home, so you too can experience the joy of knowing him. And when he comes the second time, our joy will be complete as we escape the coming judgement on the earth and experience the joy of living in God’s presence for eternity.
