The doorway in…

 The Kingdom is often SO different than we expect. Last week we took a glimpse at Jesus sharing the ‘Beatitudes’. Nothing shows how different the Kingdom is from many of our expectations than this passage. 

 I wanted to touch on the first one again… “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3. I can imagine the disciples, brand new followers of Jesus, with quizzical looks and nervous laughter. “Shouldn’t you have just said, “Blessed are the ‘strong’ in spirit?” That would make a lot more sense?” But Jesus starts it off right, “I declare that you are blessed if you are poor in spirit… I declare that you are blessed if you don’t have anything of your own… because these are the ones that will find they have it all… the Kingdom of Heaven.”  The doorway in, is to come to Jesus with nothing to offer that can earn your way, or pay even a part of it, but who trust Jesus for it all. This is the ONLY doorway!  It is not those who think they have it all together, but those who recognise how desperately poor we are without him and he is the only hope we have.

 Ephesians 2 says, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins…”  What does a dead person have to offer?  What can they bring to the table? Nothing! And then a few lines down some of the greatest words of relief… “But God”. God steps in and does what we could not. “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ…”

 The way it all begins is through the doorway, ‘poor in spirit’. 

 Jesus comes onto the scene proclaiming the gospel of God… “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe the gospel..” Mark 1:14. Repent, humble yourself, come poor in spirit and you will find the entrance into the whole of the Kingdom of God. What a relief, we don't have to be anything because he is everything!

 This weekend Rachelle and I are away at a leadership weekend near Vernon with couples from our churches and Alan Braun will be taking KCF deeper in ‘the mountain sermon’.
