Is it really all about Jesus?

I have sometimes wondered - “I know that the whole of the Old Testament is about Jesus, and points to him, but how? And really, does every part speak about him?”  It’s a bit like the school kid who when asked what lives in trees and eats nuts, has a sneaking suspicion that that sounds a lot like a squirrel but knows that the correct answer must surely be ‘Jesus’!

How does it really work? Are we overstating something? Well, yes in some ways, not every story has a direct link to Jesus - but Jesus helps us with his own answer to this question. In Luke 24 when he comes up to some disciples walking in sorrow on the Emmaus road, they don’t even recognise him for a long part of the discussion… It was only as he broke the bread that their eyes were opened.  But on the road he said this to them, answering our question too… “O foolish ones, (I think he probably said it with some great compassion! : ), and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory!” And then it says… “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them IN ALL THE SCRIPTURES the things concerning himself.”

Tim Mackie (creator of the Bible Project) is so helpful with this, describing that through the whole Old Testament, it is like we get to see the shape of a silhouette, the one who is coming, and each character who comes along, shows us a little more of the shape and yet falls a long way short of the reality of who it is! And the whole of the Old Testament points to one coming and the longing is increased with every enlargement of the silouette, Untill… Jesus steps onto the scene.

Jesus is the fulfillment of it all! The whole of the Old points to the one coming, and in a moment, the dark shape comes to multicolored clarity. He is here.

This Sunday we will watch and see as he steps onto the scene and the silhouette is done away with forever. And he declares about the whole of the Old Testament, that he has not come to get rid of it, but to perfectly fulfill it all.

Love to all and see you soon,

Andrew
