Ask a child what they want to be when they grow up? Never do you get dishwasher, janitor, or Sani pump operator. I worked as a janitor for twelve years, while planting our first church in Crawford Bay. It took years for the community to accept that a minister of the church could also be a toilet scrubber. It seemed my yellow rubber gloves didn’t match well with the clerical collar image.
There is a story told of a prominent wealthy CEO of an airline company wanting to see Mother Teresa to personally give her free airline tickets. When he arrived at the mission, he was told the Sister was out back cleaning toilets. Mother Teresa, thinking he was the new volunteer, handed him a toilet brush, some supplies and told him to come and see her when he was finished. “He said those twenty minutes spent cleaning toilets had filled him with the greatest joy he had ever known, because by putting his hands to Mother Teresa’s work, he became part of that work.” (oclarim.com)
Maybe kids don’t want to be a servant when they grow up because they don’t see adults celebrate Servanthood. Often, we are more like the two disciples of Jesus; James and John. They got their mother to promote their careers, pushing Jesus to put her boys at the right and left of Jesus when he came into His Kingdom. One would expect this of any good Jewish mother, but the boys set her up for it (Matthew 20 and Mark 10). We celebrate Doctors, Firefighters, Astronauts, Politicians (ok maybe not so much) but you get my point, we want to be a somebody. Jesus had a different take on this. He said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:25-28)
Jesus is teaching that the path to greatness is serving. Revolutionary, but not what they wanted to hear.
This Sunday, I will be continuing my WHY series. We will be talking about Why be a Servant. It will not be another sermon on how to be a servant, or what a servant does, but why servanthood is the highest positional stance one can take. It is my belief that if we know the “why” it will be easier to do the what and how. And when it comes to scrubbing toilets, the “why” is way more important than the “how”.
Look forward to seeing you this Sunday.
