What Are You?

Are you frustrated with your own shyness and unwilling to step forward? Are you occasionally (more often than not) embarrassed by your outgoing and run of the mouth ways? Do you take life way to serious, and wonder why people don’t feel the same way? Are you accused of being a bit too bossy, demanding, and sometimes domineering? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I’ve got great news for you. These negative qualities are indicators of four distinct personalities, a concept that has been explored and studied since 300 BC. The thought is that humanity can be divided into four groups, each having a dominate and subordinate disposition. They are sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic and melancholic. Here is a short description of each:

The Choleric person will be the driver, self starter, never giving up. His needs are to win, works hard without complaining, and has great ambition. The downside is that the choleric can seem bossy, impetuous, and appear inflexible. The Choleric’s time table is now and may see people as a means to an end. But we love the Choleric, as nothing would get done without these natural born leaders.

The Sanguine - Everyone loves the Sanguine, or almost everyone. They are the life of the party, the language is expressive, and they love people. The downside is they can talk too much, laugh too loud, exaggerate and simply can be annoying to some people. Sanguines hate to be alone, have trouble saying no, are impulsive and tend to overcommit. They are often late to appointments and are people pleasers. But we love the Sanguine as their warm hearted and optimistic approach to life is refreshing and energizing.

The Phlegmatic is the steady one who seeks to get along. Lives a balanced life, not extreme in anyway. Here is a person you can depend upon. The Phlegmatic likes it to be safe, not a risk taker at all. The downside can be seen as passive. If the Choleric time line is now, and the Sanguine is late, the Phlegmatic time line is tomorrow. We love the Phlegmatic; while they may not be the life of the party, they can be the strength of the organization.

The Melancholy are the deep thinkers in our midst. They love to analyse and they have a need to have things precise. No guessing here. Because they love to see things from every angle, they can appear as negative, often see people as beyond help. Melancholy people are the artist, creative ones, the deep feeling and sensitive ones in our circle. However, they can also tend to be despondent and moody and often fight depression. We love the Melancholy ones as they bring deep thought, creativity and make our world a more beautiful place.

For an exhaustive list of the positive and negative characteristics of the four dispositions you can visit http://www.temperamentcounselinginc.com/strengths-and-weaknesses.html#_ftn1

The point I am making today, is that we often focus all our attention on the negative aspects of our deposition, all the while minimizing the strengths that each of us possess. Or we concentrate the negative qualities of those around us, forgetting the tremendous value they bring to the table. God made us unique. We all have strengths and each temperament compliments the other. Together we make the world go around.

In our Thinking Differently series, this Sunday I will be exploring these dispositions and how by thinking differently, we can accentuate the positive which will then minimize the negative.

See you this Sunday. If you live out of town, the sermons are online at www.KootenayChristianFellowship.com.
