Die For
I have returned from Haiti. I did not experience a riot, roadblock, an earthquake or a hurricane. Our car was stopped at two police check points and I had to hand over my passport at one of them. The only other challenging piece of business was the single mosquito that I had to send to the eternal resting place of mosquitos. I get a certain satisfaction of ridding the earth of the pesky insect. I mention this as there was a lot of apprehension prior to our departure. Some were worried to the point of tears, while others offered prayers, and some tried to dissuade me from going. I have a few reflections on this:
1. While we need to be as prudent as possible, we can’t always allow fear and media information to control our agenda or decision making. There is an interesting verse in the Bible that says, Proverbs 22:13 (NLT2) The lazy person claims, “There’s a lion out there! If I go outside, I might be killed!”
If we don’t take any risks, we won’t get anything done. For every action there is a potential failure or harm to be experienced. If one removes all possibility of the risk factor, you may be safe, but useless.
2. We have lost the mystic of “dying for a cause.” Our culture has placed safety at such a high level, that serving Jesus has become untenable. Jesus said, “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.” (Matthew 10:39) What are you willing to die for? What passion has so gripped you that you are willing to give up money, friends, status, and even your very life for? Nothing! If that is your answer, then you will accomplish the same. But if you are willing to give up your very life, you will gain a life of accomplishments, successes, pleasures; along with pain, heartache, and disappointments. If we are not willing to accept the latter, you will never experience the former.
3. I have a story to tell. God saw me through. Many people’s lives are boring, dull, and tiresome. Give yourself to God’s work and words like boring, dull and tiresome will never be a part of your vocabulary. It is exciting and fulfilling to be a part of God’s holy mission. Each person has it you know. It is just that we never take time to find out what our calling is. Happy is the one, who is in the centre of the will of God for their lives.
I want to thank all who gave towards the Haiti mission, those who prayed, and those who cared for my safety, (I know you really prayed). The pastors attending the conference I spoke at, were extremely grateful for the time of encouragement and teaching they received. The people of Haiti were so thankful for the rice they obtained by your donations. And by our coming, persuaded them that we were actually praying for them and concerned about their welfare. As the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words.
Haiti Arise is again receiving teams. Please consider making your way to Haiti, that Haiti might make a way in you.
