Is your engine light on?

I read the other day, “whatever you bury alive stays alive and burrows deeper into your heart” (Chironna, Mark. On the Edge of Hope). The idea that what we bury alive in our hearts never dies, is a thought we often don’t want to embrace. Let sleeping dogs lie, we pontificate. Just because we have stuffed it, buried it deep in the recess of our subconscious, or have forgotten about it; the pain of loss, the agony of trauma once felt, torment of failed relationships don’t heal themselves. Time may ease the everyday mental conflict, but the buried experience is actually silently and methodically influencing one’s life and decision making without our permission or even awareness. Emotions like anger, depression, sadness, crying, fear, irritation, impatience, compulsive reactions, inability to make a decision, worry, trust issues are all signs and signals that you may have unresolved issues and carrying pain in your inner being.

Emotions are a God given mechanism within our bodies to function like an engine light on the dash of a vehicle. The light flashes and we know something is wrong. We may be tempted to ignore it, put tape over it, or even wonder why it is there, but if we don’t get to the root of the problem, we are in for a day of reckoning. Emotions are telling us something.

We look at someone and think: Wow, are they ever dysfunctional. (Maybe you are thinking that about yourself.) Dysfunctional behaviour is often our coping mechanism so we can handle unresolved emotional pain, rejection, or trauma. Dysfunction may work in the short term, but eventually our internal engine will blow up.

I have good news for us. Jesus is a safe and trusted counsellor that works in consort with the Holy Spirit to help us to process and bring us to a place of healing in our interior being. (Psalms 55:22, 62:5-8)

This Sunday, I will be continuing the series “Praying in a New Way” and the theme will be on how we can allow the Spirit to touch our inner being and bring healing in those areas we have hidden or ignored.

Bring a friend and let’s begin to pray in a new way.
