Over the last number of weeks, we have been looking at different relationships that the gospel transforms: wives and husbands, children and parents, and this week slaves and masters. But what’s the point? What is Paul after in what he is writing, and more importantly, what is God after in us as he inspires these words of Paul to be written? Becoming nicer people? Squeaky clean families? The picture-perfect unit?
I believe that what God is after is the likeness of Jesus in us, and then that likeness filling the earth. Not so we can look more like a perfect picture of Jesus to hang on the wall, not just reformed character, but that his people would LOOK more and more like Jesus and would ACT more and more like Jesus in the world. As we see in the first half of Ephesians, God has done all the heavy lifting. While we were dead and had nothing that we could offer or bring to the table, Jesus died for us and raised us to life; a work completely flowing out from the love of the Father and his grace towards us. He made us alive together with Christ (see Ephesians 2:1-10).
After doing all the heavy lifting, he goes even further, and fills us with his Spirit, the very presence of God that enables us to know him and to live increasingly like him. Without the Spirit we have not a hope, we simply can’t reform and improve ourselves. But with his presence and help, and as the truth of the God who comes ‘Under not Over’ to lift us up, starts to work in our lives, it begins to change everything regarding the way we live and the way we relate to one another. As a result, like a tarnished brass tray being lovingly polished and cleaned, the image and reflection of the cleaner becomes steadily clearer and more seen to the world around us.
So, God is after the glorious image of Jesus in us, transforming everything, and his glory filling the earth. The truth of the gospel is like a ticking time bomb, you place it within the construct of relationships that we are living in and wait for it to explode! Or maybe, better still, we should stick with the analogy Jesus used of yeast, you put this truth of what God has done and who he is into any situation, and it will begin to work its way throughout the whole.
God is after his life working in us, transforming us and starting to transform everything around us, that Jesus might be seen, and his likeness would fill the earth – Pastor Andrew Freeman. We look forward to seeing you Sunday @10:30am, 520 Falls Street.
