Psalm 124 - The Narrow Escape

On April 7th, 1998, world-renowned survival expert and adventurer ‘Bear Grylls’ was climbing on Everest. He and his friend were just navigating the ‘Khumbu Icefall’, a notoriously dangerous part of the route. Bear reached the end of one length of rope and temporarily unclipped and clipped back into a thinner rope that was used mainly as a guide rope. At that very moment the ledge that Bear was standing on gave way and in a split second he was falling full speed into the darkness of the crevasse below. His free-fall jolted to a stop as the guide rope held, and he was left dangling, looking down into the abyss. His friend and another climber managed to pull the shaken Grylls back to safety; somehow the thin guide rope had held the full weight of his fall… it was a very narrow escape that he would never forget.

Psalm 124 tells of another very narrow escape of a different kind. David calls the people of God to look back and remember the occasion when they were surrounded, under attack, surely going down and yet the LORD had been on their side. Everything seemed to be going against them, and yet all they needed was one thing, the one thing that the enemy had overlooked, the presence and the power of the LORD on their side. Like a rope that looks insignificant and yet is utterly dependable in the moment to keep from falling, so the LORD, Yahweh, the covenant-keeping God is all that is needed. David likens their close call to a bird escaping from the fowler’s snare. They have been given another chance, against all odds.

We, too, have had an incredible escape. No chance of survival, no way of escape, our destruction certain, the noose around our necks and yet there is one who has broken the snare and we have escaped.  It wasn’t that we were clever and can boast of how we had escaped, the Psalm says, “the snare has been broken, and we have escaped”. It was not done by our own power or skill, but a totally unexpected deliverance has burst in, breaking the thing that would have held us captive forever. And David leaves no doubt who should get the glory - “Our help is in the name of the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth.” Yahweh, the covenant-keeping, merciful, compassionate, powerful God.

This Sunday, we are called to remember our escape and to give glory where glory is due, the one who has all the power to act and also has the compassion to save.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday at 10:30am – Andrew Freeman.
