Follow Me

”Follow me and I will make you fishers of men” (Mark 1:17) These are the words of Jesus as he called some of his first disciples, a few rough fishermen. For me these words have been such life and direction for a number of years. They are packed with destiny and purpose. You could literally talk about these words endlessly and still be finding more and more life in them.

I love how Jesus puts the call in a way that these fishermen will understand, putting it into their context. But the call is the same for all “Follow me”.

”Follow”. Leave your plans behind, leave what you thought was important and follow me, I have something different for you to be doing.

Then, the word “Me”, we could spend eternity on this word, follow Jesus, the one true God, the savior of the world, totally dependable, the one who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. In these two words we have our direction, our pursuit, our path, our goal, our treasure. Not only do we have our direction but we have an invitation into intimacy with him, fellowship, relationship. He invites us to BE with him. He invites us into a relationship that will be completely life giving and will shape and change us into his likeness.  Wow, I could get carried away, but this is just a short blog post!! : )

This call is also full of grace and purpose. HE is making us into something. He is doing the work! As we follow him he is making us into his likeness and sending us on the mission of his heart… to reach people and bring them into his family. He says, “I will make you fishers of men.” Just speak those words back to yourselves a few times, putting the emphasis on a different word each time…

I will make you fishers of men”

”I WILL make you fishers of men”

“I will MAKE you fishers of men”

”I will make YOU fishers of men”

”I will make you FISHERS of men”

”I will make you fishers of MEN

Each emphasis is full of grace and purpose.

In these few words we have an invitation to INTIMACY and MISSION, to GRACE and to PURPOSE. He is the one ‘calling’ us, he is the one ‘making’ us. Paul says much later, “Christ’s love compels us…” (2 Corinthians 5:14). As we follow him we catch his heart for the world around us, he changes us into his likeness and this love compels us to continue what is on his heart.

This is the process of discipleship, following Jesus, being changed into his image, carrying out his purpose in the world. Let us run after this!
