Good News for the Poor
Do you consider yourself poor?If you do—and if you are—I have good news: God has a special place in His heart for you.
Jesus turned the world’s values upside down. He said, “Woe to you who are rich” (Luke 6:24), but “Blessed are you who are poor” (Luke 6:20).
Jesus’ first recorded public message was a quotation from the prophet Isaiah. In Luke 4:18 (NIV), He declares:“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.”
But what is this “good news”?
The poor are often oppressed by the rich—God will fight for you.The poor struggle to make ends meet—God will provide for you.The poor worry about the future—God is our hope and our ever-present help in times of need.
These are not vague sentiments; they are promises of God to a group of people who are often harassed by power, taken advantage of by the privileged, and dismissed by the elites. In the kingdom of God, it is not so.
The good news for the poor is that God is creating a new reality—one where the poor are blessed, where they are truly “well off” in Him. And the delivery of this good news is not abstract; it comes through the hands and feet of the body of Christ—the Church.
This is the great privilege of the Church: to be a blessing. And in blessing others, the Church itself is blessed.
Caring for the poor is not optional—it is foundational to the life of the Church.
This Sunday, I will be sharing on Good News for the Poor. My prayer is that it will encourage and challenge us all.
