Many Christians suffer from “know it all syndrome” (KIAS).  KIAS is a terrible disease. It is contracted by attending disciple training sessions, bible studies, reading end time books, taking spiritual development courses, attending conferences, and faithfully attending Sunday morning sermons, but never taking opportunity to put into practice the good knowledge one is filling their head with.  KIAS people become so spiritually fat that they can’t “run the race” (1 Corinthians 9:24).

But KIAS trained people are really good at telling others how to run the race. They can recite the four spiritual laws, explain the trinity, expound on the virtues of holy living, and have all the tithing scriptures memorized.

But they don’t know how to love a homeless person, how to talk to a pregnant teen considering an abortion, or have a “normal” conversation with a man at a hockey game. The man with KIAS knows he shouldn’t look at porn, but does anyway. The KIAS woman knows that gossip and bitterness is wrong, but just can’t help herself in the office lunchroom.

KIAS doesn’t happen in an instant, it is a slow moving, insidious disease that gradually but deliberately “puffs one up” with knowledge. (1 Corinthians 8:1 Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.)

What is the antidote to this disease? The answer is simple. Love. When we get involved with people, all our fine sounding arguments will be put to the test.  In the laboratory of real life, we begin to put theory to practice. We find ourselves taking the “puff” out of our posture and getting on our knees with desperation. When theory and practice come together, we participate in an exercise that is spiritual and profitable both for the recipient and the practitioner.  This doesn’t happen in a classroom, sitting in a pew, or attending a seminar. It happens when we connect with people in a small group, when we commit to a service club in the community, when we serve in a ministry capacity in a local church.  In short, we protect ourselves from KIAS when we are involved with people in a real and authentic manner.

Oh, and one last thing. People with KIAS often don’t even know they have it. That is until they get involved in a small group, or a church ministry involving people. Why not give spiritual pride a kick in the pants and commit to a growth group and watch your spiritual muscles develop. See the spiritual fat disappear and inner joy take over your spirit as you eliminate KIAS from your life.
