Giving Thanks

For whom do you thank God for?  A common phrase that the Apostle Paul used when he wrote to the churches was, “I never stop giving thanks for you.” He gave thanks for the folks at Corinth, Philippi, Thessalonica, those in Rome, and at Ephesus despite the fact that there were some really bad apples in those churches.  He taught Timothy to give thanks for all those in leadership saying, “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone and secondly; for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2

When I meditate on this, I am again struck with the contrast between a true follower of Jesus and those that are religious and irreligious. Followers of Jesus are those who give thanks for all people. Now it is easy to give thanks for the one who brings you coffee on a Saturday morning, while you lounge in your bed. (You better give thanks, or you might be wearing that coffee, just sayin’.) But how hard is it to give thanks for that “king” sometimes called Trump or Trudeau, or Putin.

Giving Thanks for All

Do you find it easy to give thanks for all people, like your boss, your annoying co-worker, the obnoxious loud neighbor, your spouse when she/he doesn’t do what you want. Paul declares that “We ought always to give thanks to God for you,” (2 Thessalonians 1:3) meaning we are supposed to do it, this is right and proper, and it is expected - “we ought to”. But we don’t. We complain about everything and everybody.

When we give thanks for someone, it forces us to see the good in that person, even if they are rude, crude, and offensive. Strange things will happen when we make it a practice to give thanks for everyone, we will begin to have a better disposition ourselves.

Finding yourself a little negative; give thanks for those around you. Feeling despondent and disappointed with your job or co-workers; give thanks for them, and see the difference it makes.  Feeling helpless and powerless with big oppressive government; give thanks and your spirit will begin to rise. The practice of giving thanks is one piece in maintaining emotional health. Thankful people are happier people.

Why not make it a habit. Whenever you want to grumble decide to give thanks instead. Your world will be brighter and those annoying people will somehow magically change and not be quite so annoying anymore. It takes time though and truthfully some people will never change. Don’t worry about them, just give thanks for what is good in them, and you will see the difference it makes in your own life.

This Sunday, I will be sharing on the value of being connected and how giving thanks for each other is one of the key elements to healthy relationships. This one simple (anyone can do it) practice has the ability to revolutionize your outlook on life. Join us.
