Double Minded

Should I or should I not write this blog? I am of two minds. Sometimes people email me and tell me how it impacted them. Others see it in their inbox and just hit the delete button. Maybe it is not worth the effort, but then on the other hand, it might be just what someone needs. I think I will go for a coffee and think about this thing.

My theme today is double mindedness. James, the brother of Jesus understood a thing or two about being double minded. He declares “a double-minded man, [is] unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:8) He could write about this, because he was one who could not make up his mind about Jesus. Finally, long after his death, James sees the light and becomes a follower and pens the book called by his name.

James uses the word “unstable” reflecting the idea of one who is drunk and has lost one’s ability to balance their walk. They are all over the place.

I was having trouble with balance, so I went to the doctor (not because I was drinking). After a battery of tests, finding nothing physically wrong with me, the Doc sent me to the physiotherapist. She gave me a bunch of eye exercises. It seemed I needed to train my eyes to focus so my balance would be better.

If you want to maintain your balance while walking across a creek on a log, you have to fix your eyes on a point other than your feet. I know this from experience, as I have gotten wet a few times. If you are looking here, there, everywhere; you will be in the drink.

In the context of living a balanced life, James says,

James 1:5-7 (NKJV) 5  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;”

Who doesn’t lack wisdom? Life is complicated. But when we “ask God” we need to be focused on God giving the answer. Often, we are not. We cast our eyes other places for wisdom. The end result is we stumble, become unstable in our mind, and consequently fail to experience the true wisdom that is available for us.

The writer of Hebrews says, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,” (Hebrews 12:2) If one focuses on Jesus, you will not become unstable despite life’s challenges, the difficulties that challenge our faith or even the pain that besets us.

This Sunday I will be continuing my sermon series on Think Differently. Remember, nothing will be different until we think differently. We will be exploring the ways we can overcome being double minded, how we can focus, and experience answers to our prayers.

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday.
