There is a lot of emphasis on a healthy body. A big problem is that we treat our body in parts instead of the whole. If we have a problem physically, we see a doctor. If we have a problem with our mind, we see a psychologist. If we have a problem with our soul (the spiritual part of our being), we see… well who do we see… it could be the bartender, the good friend next door, the priest, pastor, yoga teacher, or a self-help book. We often don’t connect the dots. We are three part beings deeply connected with each part. What is happening in one part of our being will affect and determine the health and vitality in the other two parts. The bible instructs us to take care of our physical bodies, our spiritual side and the mind. Below is a list of things one could practice that affect our triune life:
1. Eat healthy, exercise regularly, and rest are three rather simple but extremely important activities to keep your body healthy. These three activities also influence our mind and our spirit. Failure in these areas can result in grumpiness, workplace accidents, and spiritual confusion.
2. Renewing our mind, (a steady diet of positive thoughts) practicing biblical meditation such as prayer, contemplation, reflection, and developing and maintaining healthy relationships will make for good mental health. Your body will be less frequently sick and the spirit will soar.
3. Awaken your spirit by inviting Christ into your life. Laugh more, have fun, and practice worship. Release anxiety, stop inappropriateself-care, and voluntarily give yourself to others. Your spirit will come alive and so will your mind and body. Spiritual life affects every part of our being, but often it is neglected.
There is a promise in the bible which has given me encouragement over the years:
2 Peter 1:3-4 (NIV) 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
I take exceptional hope in the phrase, “his divine power has given us EVERYTHING we need for LIFE and GODLINESS.
“Everything” is a lot and “life and godliness” covers the three parts of our being. This is a wonderful promise. I have found it to work for me and literally thousands of others over the years of my life.
This Sunday, I will be talking about renewing the mind. The word renew comes from the word “to renovate”. Sometimes that is what it takes, some radical deconstruction and then some practical construction so that what is happening in the soul is in agreement with the mind, and the body (house). Experience the fruit of it all.
See you this weekend.
We will have a short commemorative ceremony in honour of those who have given their lives for us.
This Sunday is Communion Sunday. It is when we come together as a family to eat at the Lord’s Table.
